Thermostat Problem with Fridge

I have a small Hotpoint larder fridge with freezer compartment and have just defrosted it manually. Normally I have the dial set on No. 3 but now at this setting now it doesn’t shut off. However, if I turn it lower i.e. before I hear a click it works OK. Can someone please tell me what’s happening?

Before I rush to buy a new fridge, is there anything I can do?
