Hi,
Thermostat starting acting up and switching on/off randomly so I ordered one off ebay but without doing any research :) Can someone please let me know if its possible to install the new one given my set up? Images below
Current one is just this switch which connects to the Google nest hub

No, unless you have extra wires behind that con connect elsewhere or can run new cable. You’d need a permanent live and permanent neutral plus those 2 switch wires. Better with just another battery operated one tbh.

Does that mean only battery operated units will work with this set up? Unless I want to do additional wiring? What is the third wire for in the current set up? I see its not connected to anything

I found Nest Gen 3 had a load of extras which could be turned off, it was supposed to learn, I found it built up a silly schedule so turned it off, it was also supposed to have geofencing, again it did not allow you to set distance, so turned it off, also anti legionaries which Nest e will not have.

It can show when and how long it ran for 1732369189394.png Friday, showing when and Thursday how long. In my case useless, as running Wiser in parallel, but should be easy enough to find out what it is doing wrong. And likely can be corrected.

Here is an example of the bits you can turn off.

There are not many thermostats which have a battery powered hub, so likely stuck with Nest e

I actually liked the Nest E, but ever since I got a new phone - I've been unable to pair it with the hub in the lounge - so its a pain in the ass to do anything "smart". All I can do is use it to set a temperature then leave it and come back to turn it off.

EVery single time I try to pair it - the hub says that it failed to pair and gives no reason as to why. I've found a few "smart" wifi thermostats online that use quite big batteries (built in) but that probably means charging the thing every few months. Maybe I can try to figure out if I can fix the nest hub before going for one of those.

Thanks all for your input - very helpful

Do you actually need control via a phone? You could try a Drayton Digistat 2290b - a simple AA battery operated 2 wire thermostat with Bluetooth and or app control. If you don’t need app/phone control, plenty of thermostats available
