I've just bought a new torpedo type thermostatic shower mixer to replace a broken circular type. One of Lidl's best at £ 25...! There is no reference to the correct entry for hot and cold supply in the 'manual' or otherwise. Since there is only a single channel flow valve on it - at one end - with the temperature selector at the other end, I should imagine that it is important. Any info would be appreciated.

If you have the manufacturers details i would give them a call as i wouldn't assume that it has a reversible cartridge inside at £25.
Normally the hot is fed on the left hand side looking face on but with thermostatic mixer valves this isn't always the case.
