Thermostatic valves

I have Drayton Thermostatic valves fitted to my rads.. On switching the system on, due to non-use, a couple of the valves have stuck shut. I have managed to take the top pieces off, and found that after taking a small retaining nut off, I can remove the plunger - but that's it. Can I clear the valves without shutting down the system and taking them off?

You can tap the pin with a small hammer, twist it with pliers, wiggle the small nut you undid. Would it work? Maybe.
