Hi. I've done a search for this but unable to find definitive answer. Basically I'm applying some tiles around my fireplace. I've done the hearth (see pic) and now need to tile around the opening. I'm needing to build the tiles out a bit and finding that a 8mm square notch Trowell is not giving me enough thickness. I know it's not normally but would there be any problem with using a Trowell more suited to floor tiles i.e 10mm square notch or even one with the u notches which gives a thicker adhesive bed
Thanks in advance any advice is very welcome

Skim some adhesive on and as it sets ( still damp) use your notched trowel to apply adhesive and fit

Thanks for the reply. Problem is I'm using special heat proof adhesive and the company state it must be applied in 1 layer. I need a final finished thickness of around 4 to 5mm but finding the square notch 8mm squashed down to far less than I require.was hoping I may be able to use a different Trowell type that would give me more thickness

put adhesive on floor and on back of tile in the other direction, should bed down to the required thickness.

It gives a thicker bed without having to buy a new trowel. For a professional they would buy a new one, for diy it might not see any more use for quite a few years.
