I'm hoping to use my existing subbase for a block paved patio.

To stay 150mm below the dpc I'd need to use a 25mm bedding layer - about half what's recommended.

Would that do any harm? I can't see that the sand adds much strength and it would be pre-compacted with a plate vibrator.

Thanks

A patio is lightly trafficked.

The bedding sand is mainly for bedding and levelling.

If the ground below the sand is well compacted and unlikely to move (ie not topsoil) then you can use 25mm of sand

Also make sure the sub-base has no large voids which the bedding sand could wash or sink into

Woody, thanks.

WalltoWall, you're the first person I've heard say 7.5cm - everyone else says 5cm. Don't you get any problems with settlement in a sand bed that deep?
