Does anyone have any experience of third-party cordless batteries?

I've seen some on ebay for Ryobi which are stated as being 3.0 AH Li-Ions for £40. There are others for other makes too, and the feedback seems OK

I was wondering if these charge OK in the [Ryobi or others] chargers, as well as having the stated capacity?

correct me if i am wrong i believe the the ryobies are the old battery design as in the nicad shape
if this is the case you are relying on a nicad charger which is quite basic charging a modern battery with different needs and care
the quoted capacity at 3 amps may or may not be achevable it depends on the chargers configuration

the li-ion chargers use 2 extra contacts on the batteries to charge so different batteries get different treatment

i bought one recently from a battery specialist on ebay for my milwaukee 18 volt drill as i couldnt justify the £100 for a milwaukee item.
It has been pretty good so far and the run time is very good, the charger played up a bit on the first few charges but it has been fine since It is an nimh battery and the old ones were nicd. (charger states it will charge both types)

They should work fine but if you can try to get ones which are the specific Li-Mn type of Lithium Ion which is what Ryobi use.
They are not as high a capacity (15% less or so) but are more stable (less violent reaction if damaged) and work down to lower temperature of around -20C.

Thanks for the replies

It's a good job big-all mentioned those two extra contacts, as it does seem that the ebay batteries I was looking at does not have them.

In the end, I have just "won" two "nearly new" (whatever that means) proper Ryobi Li-Ions from a Chinese seller who seems to be offloading loads of them.

Works out £30 each delivered (if they get here LOL), and if they are OK, I may see about some more.

Update.

The batteries were delivered from China in 8 working days, so that seems pretty good

They seem to be re-celled, and are 2nd hand Ryobi units (as mentioned in the listing), and conveniently come with knocks, scratches and dings - good for hiding new tool purchases from the mrs, and stops you looking a noob on site. LOL

The Ryobi part just makes you look cheap on site. ;)

But I am cheap on site ... and don't need a brand name to compensate for anything :p
