I live in a detached house that was built in 1901. It is kept up in a good condition. My question is, how long will the building last, as things don't last forever? :?:

how long is a piece of string?

it really depends how its treated and looked after etc etc, no one can give you an answer that you will want to hear

Breezer has said it all! To expand a little, the inorganic stuff (brick, slate, glass) is virtually indestructible. It's man made rock! Wind and rain will gradually erode the surface but this is a very slow process and every single brick, slate and window pane is replaceable. The mortar joints are a weak spot so you will have to repoint them occasionally.

The organic stuff (wood) is less robust. Even if you keep it safe from fungal attack it will eventually succumb to oxidation but you only have to look around some really old buildings to see how long a piece of wood can survive.

The life of a building depends heavily on how much effort its owner is prepared to put into preserving it. There are houses out there hundreds of years old. On the other hand, you only have to leave one cigarette end in a stupid place and your wood will be totally oxidized in a few hours!

Depends on the size of the plot...sell it with planning permission for 6 executive homes  And retire to Spain
