An engineer at works tells me that 3 port valves that can be set to heating only/ water only of both direct the flow to either water or heating but never both at the same time. Is this true?

He says if you select to have both heating and hot water then it will automatically shuttle between the two (alternating).

Is this true for all or just certain models (I have a potterton mid-position diverter valve.

It wouldn't really be a three port if it only went two ways now, would it?

On saying that, I don't know everythinig there is to know about them, just that ours stops in one of three positions, one which closes off the water, one which closes off the heat, and by sitting in the middle diverts heat to both...

that was my argument - but this geezer is adament ,not adam ant ;o)

I think the mid position bit is the diversion

..

Yes it would, yours is a three or mid-position 3-port valve, the other type is a two position 3-port valve. Ports and positions are not the same.
