Hi,
ever since we moved in to this house there's been a 'thump' noise every time we walk over a particular part of the (downstairs) living room floor, which is a standard floorboards over joists construction. I'd always assumed that this was due to a loose floorboard or two but since taking up the carpet yesterday, I can see that the floorboards are secure and flat. Further investigation has led me to believe that it's actually one of the joists that is causing the thump.
Curiously, the floor doesn't make the noise when you step on to the affected area, but when you step off or away from it. So if you stand on the affected joist and jump up, the floor thumps as you rise up, but not when you land again!
Any clues as to where I should start looking would be gratefully received.
