Tiling a floor

Dear All

I'm confused by so many web sites saying how to tile a floor. I have a small bathroom 3m square to tile. I have tongue and groove floor boards which are striaght and sound i.e. no creaks or dips.

I am planning to use a ceramic tile 300mmx300mmx10mm

Do I need to screw down a ply base and if so what thickness. I've had from 8mm - 15mm.

Is there a specific flex adhesive and grout that should be used? I've seen so many product by a company called BAL that I'm just now confused

I would be grateful is there are any DIY pro's that can offer me their opinion and possibly a reasoning for why I have so many conflicting ideas

You can ply overboard; minimum BS & adhesive manufacturers’ recommendation is 15mm WBP but in most cases 12mm is recognised as sufficient but that is the minimum. You can overboard with tile backer boards as long as they are laid correctly but they are not my personal preference & I much prefer to replace the floor regardless as then I know where I stand & it doesn't give stupidly high door thresholds. I use 18-25mm WBP ply depending on the floor joist size/pitch/span & fix with screws every 150mm into the joists not just into the boards (watch pipes & cables).

Adhesive will vary depend on your floor & the tiles you’re using. BAL is good & all I use but there are others equally as good but avoid the cheapo adhesive/grout sold by the majority of the DIY sheds. Ceramic tiles present no real problem, use this;

Thanks. Have you ever used BAL FASTFLEX? It claims that you can tile direct to floor boards which would be handy as it will save building my floor level upto 25mm


Tongued and grooved floorboards
Ensure boards are dry, rigid and securely fixed (screwed to joists
at 300mm centres, including any cross-noggings, if necessary).
Sand (abrade) surfaces and ensure any surface coatings
removed, e.g. varnish, lacquers, etc.
Seal board surfaces with 2 coats of neat BAL PRIME APD or
BAL PRIMER, applying second coat at 90° to

I used it once before in the past mate and believe me, its not the way to go, they advertise oxos on buses but dont sell them, dont always take what you read as gospel, even from a very good company like BAL.
Do it the way Richard advised and you will have no problems at all
