Hi,

We have recently bought a new house and unfortunately all the bathrooms/ensuites are carpeted. We want to tile the floors but are unsure about whether to take the toilets and sinks out first. I know that the best results will be achieved if we take everything out and tile the floor (and read all the previous posts) before replacing them but as we have chipboard flooring there is going to be a significant height difference once we take into account the 18mm plywood, tiles and heatmat. It will have to get a plumber to reinstall as there will be considerable adjustments to soil and supply pipes - pretty expensive.

Can a satisfactory result be obtained by carefully tiling around or is it really wort shelling out the £400 plumber costs?

Thanks

I take it you're overboarding the chipboard then? That's gonna be a big difference in height if you use 18mm ply (12mm should be enough unless your floor is really bouncy). You'll end up around 30mm higher up the toilet and pedestal! It would be worth spending the extra and having the toilet and basin adjusted. But if you go down this route, you'd be as well taking up the chipboard and replacing it with 25mm WBP ply anyway. Don't forget the extra support (noggins) under the ply joins.

If at all possible, I'd remove the suites first - the finish looks better and there's no holes in your tiles if you ever wish to rearrange the room in the future.

I guess you could get a good-looking finish if you were very careful cutting tiles to fit round the suites, but as Gcol says, you're going to be looking at the bottom 30mm of your pedestals and loos covered by flooring if you do it that way.
