What is the best method for tiling a bathroom chipboard floor using tile backer board?

I’m considering using 6mm backer board, but I’m unsure whether screws alone are sufficient for securing it, or if adhesive is also necessary. Any advice?

Moons ago, the chap we had in to do our en-suite, he removed all of the flooring and fitted battens (noggins) between all of the joists thus stabilising the whole lot. He then, using a long spirit-level over the whole floor, added slithers of timber to the tops of the joists where lower than the others, to get a perfectly flat floor over the whole room. It was then chip-boarded over, screwed every 400mm or so and tiled directly on to this, with 400 square porcelain tiles. It's been 12 years and no problems so far.
