I have pulled up the tiles on my fire place and what was left beneath was an uneven surface, basically whoever did it before added bits in at the side so whenever i took the tiles of it has broken the bits at the side and pulled them up with it so im left with a 3 inch by 12 inch gap at each side and around the back and there is just a slab of concrete left in the middle with rods in it which has holes all over it and is crumbling away. What can i do to fix this and have a level surface to tile? I thought about just lifting the slab up and pouring concrete in but the floor is a raised wooden floor sitting on beams so there is big gaps for the concrete to slide under. They also used glue for the flipping beading so its pulled a few chunks out of the floor in the process of getting the tiles at the sides up.

Help! I thought this was going to be an easy job!

Sorry m8, I think your talking heath but, in all honesty, I ain’t got a firkin clue what you’re post is on about which makes it difficult to give constructive advice. Either make it very much clearer what you need advice on or post some pictures; preferably, both!

FYI, I do fires as well as tiling ;)

It was the hearth I was talking about, it doesn't matter anyway I just ripped the lot out and put concrete in, has done the trick!
