Tiling on eneven bathroom walls

Hi there,

I have removed an old bathroom suite and all the old wall tiles.

In a lot of places, the tiles have taken the thin layer of finish with it, exposing rendered wall.

Can I stick the new tiles on that surface, or do I need the walls levelled, or worse still, re-skimmed first?

You need to get the tile base flat before you tile, especially if you’re considering large format tiles. The size weight are your tiles will dictate what you do next, what are they? Plaster has a weight limit of just 20 kg/sqm (including > 4kg/sqm for addy & grout) so don't go re-skiming yet. Are you going to full or half tile as now?

If the plaster comes off well then tile straight onto your Sand/cement render, it's a good surface to tile onto but as mentioned, check the weight of your tiles.

If the room is half tiled in places, cut the plaster with a stanley Knife.

I would steam that old plaster, it'll pop straight off.
