Given the choice I wouldn't,but you can if you prime it with acrylic primer.
Did this in my old house and we only moved recently,bathroom had then been done about 8 years and still fine.
Plaster board would be my choice though.

No need to skim the plasterboard tile straight onto it,tank and areas subject to a lot of wetting.
