Tiling over floor tiles

hi

I am about to tile the floor in a downsatirs loo. It is a concrete floor and is already tiled with ceramic tiles which have been down for years and are very stable. I was wondering if I could tile straight over the top of them? The connecting hall floor is about half an inch higher so would be helpful in order to bring the two heights into line. Would I need to use a bonding agent?

thanks v much.

Hello,
Yes you'll have no probs if they are all very solid. Give them a good clean first (sugar soap or specialist cleaner) and use a good quality trade bagged adhesive. You shouldnt need a bonding agent but check the addy manufacturers directions - if you use bal or granfix they have a tech support line.

Ensure the tiles are WELL fixed down, thoroughly clean & rinse off all trace of cleaning agent; most important for what your doing, use only top quality cement powder adhesive not cheap own brand or DIY (shed) products. Check your chosen adhesive manufacturers requirements for tiling over glazed tiles. With BAL you will need to modify with BAL Admix AD1 but check carefully the requirements of other trade brands, Granfix etc; use either a thick bed or full format trowel.

a good splash of pva would be ok for that, keep the adhesive a tad sloppy than normal, hope tis helps

I would not advise you use standard PVA as an additive & definitely not as a tile primer; use the correct stuff or you not only risk tile failure, you will invalidate the manufacturers product warranty!
