tiling up to stairs lead ing downward

I am tiling my floor and there is a set of stairs that lead downwards from
this level. Is there something special that I have to do with the tiles that
meet the top edge of the fist step going down. The stairs leading down
have carpet on them and I would like to keep the carpet on the stairs. How do I make a clean join from tile to carpet.
