timber fence, which paint to cover ivy markings/stains

Hi,

I live in a house where the previous owners did not mind having loads of ivy attaching itself to the timber fence. We have removed the ivy but now we were left with badly stained timber. I tried to cover the ivy markings with Ronseal fence life but that was not up to the job.

Can anyone suggest a solution? Shall I go with a coat of primer and conventional wood paint?

I wouldn't paint it personally

I find most waterbased fence stains will cover the worst of the marks, but you will probably need a few coats, and the darker the woodstain the better really.
