Timer knob not advancing Indesit dishwasher

My Indesit dishwasher has just developed a problem whereby the timer knob doesn't self advance. If I click it around manually then the dishwasher appears to work. It fills, washes and pumps out but only if I turn the knob myself. I'm hesitating to replace the control knob as these things are generally not the cause. Any ideas where to start
