Timing Belt

Hi,i own a Ford Courier 2001 1.8 td di,the engine is very good with no nasty noises.i dont have any records of the vans servicing,the only worry i have is
has the cambelt been changed,i understand the injector pump is driven by a double chain.
At what intervals should the cambelt be changed ?
is it an interference engine?

Just looking at some Autodata stuff Tom - and if your engine is designated C9DCA, BHPA or HCPA then the injection pump seems to be driven by chain by the crankshaft. A toothed belt then takes over to connect the injection pump to the camshaft and replacement is recommended between 100k and 150k miles or ten years :eek:
Please let others confirm this - I haven't done one of these.
It is an interference engine - most are.

the engine no in the V5 states the engine is IP07867 ?
The Haines manual implies if the engine is 1.8 TD DI then the inj pump is driven by a double chain
It looks like i will have to have a timing belt as the van is 12yrs old with 120k and i have no idea if its ever had a belt.
A friend of mine has just driven his van to Malta and back,he has a1.8 d Escort van,he had the van serviced and a new cambelt fitted before he went,his journey went well but 1 week after returning the cambelt broke and wrecked his engine,he was 2 mls from home.

The older Ford Endura diesel used two belts, and was available in turbo or non turbo versions, and a bit of an old nail it was too.....
However, as yours is the Tddi engine, it seems to be the one I'm referring to.
Either way - your belt replacement is listed as a 3 hour job or thereabouts so I'd recommend it be done.
Apparently your engine should have an automatic tensioner (a bonus, that) and the water pump appears to be driven by something else - which may help you to identify your particular engine. Unfortunately the engine number isn't the same as the engine code!

Thanks for replies to my question,how do i find the engine code?
I will probably need it in order to order the spares,is it best to order a kit,that is (i think) a belt and sprockets,it always amused me how a rubber belt can and does wear steel sprockets.

Ask for a timing belt kit at your motor factors Tom - all you need is the registration number. It will come with the necessary bits.
If it was made by Gates or similar I'd be delighted! Consider a new alternator belt too, and do the lot at one go.
The engine code may be within the vehicle VIN code......many letters and numerals!
Quote from Autodata - 'Vehicles built before 08/00 are fitted with a manual tensioner which must be replaced with an automatic tensioner'.
If you've any doubt about the parts, go to a Ford dealer who will definitely know whats what.

Thanks for that John,although the van is running fine it would be a very expensive mistake not to get a new belt fitted

dunno if the ford etis page would be any good for you,type in your reg or vin and hopefully your vechile will be listed with a load of info.
 
I'd go for a change every 80k. So better to change it sooner rather than later .

If you do need the engine code it can be found on a data plate inside the passenger door (by the door latch)
