I'm putting a new cistern in and I'm keen to avoid drilling through the wall with the overflow.

I've heard there are ways to connect the overflow back into the pan or into the waste stack directly (there is a metre of so of waster stack that is boxed in a running horizontally out to the main vertical stack outside) - can anyone tell me if this is possible or give me an alternative solution?

You don't say what type of toilet you are fitting, if close coupled most new ones come with internal integrated overflows. If yours doesn't you may be able to fit one.

If it's not close coupled you could fit the overflow to the pipe coming from the bottom of the cistern to the toilet using a Tundish Bowl. This is to give you a visual warning of overflow.

You must not fit it directly to the soil stack as this will allow gasses and smells into the home, not allowed.

It is actaully a separate cistern (back to wall wc).

How does the Tundish system work - is it just a t juntion into the flush pipe?

There is a picture here

but it is not clear!

cheers

Your pipe comes out side of cistern, 90 elbow down, small lenth of pipe, couple inch should do. this is the top part of fitting.

The bottom part, starting from the flush pipe up. Fit "T" fitting to flush pipe, lenth of pipe to side of cistern to line up with top section, 90 elbow up, fit Tundish Bowl to a lenth of pipe, fit so top pipe is below the rim of Tundish Bowl. Fix to wall.

Hope this helps. If not clear plumb supplier will help/advise.

if its new it should be set up with internal over flow

is the syphon lower than the top of the cistern if yes in the bag of bits supplied is there a big cap with a screw thread on it that fits in the hole where the overflow should go.

Some companys are still either still in the past or importing cheep rubbish to put in their equipment. Sad but true.

Also there's another one called Bergin overflow kit for close coupled suite which don't have a tundish but have a clear sight glass with a check valve which you can see if it's overflowing.Unfortunately there's no website available for Bergin Products Ltd.

You could ring them on 020 8202 3737 for more details, called Close Coupled - Overflow Kit.
