Toilet flushing and making weird noises in the night

I wonder if someone can help. I live in a high rise block of flats and for the past few months my toilet has been making weird noises. It usually happens in the middle of the night though it can be in the daytime too. it can last for a few minutes to six hours on one occasion. It isn't after it is flushed it just starts happening and means I am awoken nightly by the noise.

It is hard to describe the noise but it sounds mechanical like a really loud drill which stops and starts. Then at other times it flushes by itself over and over - though that is not so bad, it is the noise that is worse as being woken up each night around 3am is not so great.

We had a plumber come out but as the noise wasn't happening when he came he said there was nothing he could do (though I did record the noise on my laptop!). Does anyone know what could be causing such a noise? It is really loud and after a period of time just stops then starts again the next night.

Sounds like a ghost to me.

Can you describe what system you have, traditional ball valve, push button, tank fed, mains fed?

Is it a push button toilet?

Sounds like ballvalve in your toilet cistern,can be affected by differing water pressure in flats,either that or you have a communal water tank, if that`s above you it may be ballvalve in main tank. Go for faulty ballvalve in toilet,have it replaced.

Thanks for your replies, yes it is a push button (which I hate!) Anyway it did it again last night GRRR! I will look into changing the ballvalve. Thanks again
