Toilet overflow

Hello, I wonder if anyone can help me,

My cistern is continuosly overflowing back into the bowl. After flushing, it will refill as normal until the float is in its up position but then very slowly it will continue filling and overflowing down the pipe. There seems to be a hissing sound, as if the valve is not closing off properly. I think its one of the american stlye valves.

Does anyone have any ideas on how i can stop this happening ?

Clean the valve, or replace it. Unless the level is too high in which case the actual overflow (tall pipe) takes the water.

The level is too high. It keeps filling past the float level and down the overflow pipe.

INlet valve's leaking then - clean/change the washer?
