Toilet pan installation vertical or horizontal outlet pipe?

Hi,

I want to change my toilet, a grohe bau which constantly blocks. My outlet is vertical into the floor basically. Distance between wall and vertical outlet is 10cm to the centre of the pipe. Do i need to get a vertical toilet pan outlet, not many exist but available for better performance or a horizontal will do as well. Looking at the verticals they end around 20cm from the wall not 10cm as is mine so I would need a flexible outlet pipe or may not be able to fit it all if vertical. It really depends if the vertical toilet pan almpst touches the floor in which case I can't get any flexible pipe fitted. Should i just get horizontal like my current grohe appears to be? Thank you.

Hi,
what model ref # grohe bau wc do you have at present?
Typically no reason for the WC itself to block its usually something else?
From a side elevation can you post a pic of your present WC set up?

Grohe Bau 364 x 400mm Floor Standing Close Coupled WC 39429000 (qssupplies.co.uk) I think this one but it's the super flush model. Also see pics attached. Without going into too much detail this toilet does not have any natural curves inside the pan, all hard corners and the big "objects" don't make it out of the pan into the pipe, they get stuck at the top. I have an Ideal standard upstairs and everything flushes down! Even with very little water. Thank you very much.

Just saying but are you using full flush on the Grohe Bau - have you watched the cistern empty?
These WC's will operate, according to their site, with a half flush.
Perhaps if you get a plumber on site to have a look at the in-situ arrangement and if necessary, help you select a new WC?

However, its well more than possible that the "modern" design is the fault.
Fwiw: Your pan connector is slightly tilted as it goes into the floor.

Thank you Tel765. The flushing is fine, it works for liquids but when it comes under pressure it becomes a whole operation to leave the toilet clean! Well I am thinking that if i get a similar size replacement should work, else take it back. Thank you

It looks like the pan you have is HO with a swan-neck adaptor which may obstruct flow.

There are a few BO pans. I got a Twyfords E100 but IIRC the wall spacing is 200mm or 250mm. There may be a different model at 100mm.

Is the room big enough to pull the WC forward and have a straightforward elbow? Is the floor concrete?

Armitage is another very good maker that may have one.

Some of the unbranded imports have a poor flush.

I’d be looking at flushing issues firstly, have you checked the volume of water in the cistern? Does water rise in the pan upon flushing? If so could be a blockage in the pan outlet, or even the drain - getting rid of current toilet may not solve your issue. If you’re that set on changing it, then horizontal outlet should be fine.

Have now installed an ideal standard tempo. No issues whatsoever, passed all tests! Thank you for the answers.
