From the title it should be clear I am not an expert at plumbing or diy in general.

So this is the inside of the toilet, bottom of pic is metal gizmo that connects to push button, connected to a plastic thing that performs the flush.

when you push sometimes the plastic rod that comes out of the metal gizmo pushes the white plastic thing off.

I’ve managed to get the white plastic thing back on, but without holding it in place physically with my hand, the white plastic thing shoots off again.

Any ideas?

Push the blue tag down , fit the flusher back onto the metal bar and release the blue tag

The blue tag has to fit into the grooves to stop it coming off

If this makes sense ( it's early) and it still doesn't hold on then you need a new one

Don't forget to check the blue tag has popped up when you have fitted it , it's sprung so should do

Thanks guys, I’ve pushed the blue thing down to get it on, and it’s popped back up. The white thing feels pretty secure, however pressing the button makes it pop out again.

So I need a new white plastic Thing?

Any idea what it’s called?

It comes as part of the flush valve so to my knowledge can't be replaced alone . You could try a temporary fix with a cable ties around it and that star shape nut to hold it together

I'm not sure you can just buy the part you need without replacing the entire flush valve

Does the toilet flush ok when you hold it all together ?

It's not stiff or anything?

If all feels normal you could wedge it on until you can replace it

If after you have checked the blue tag is pulled up as far as it can go then you could wedge that to stop it popping off until you can replace it

Hope I'm making sense!

If replacing like for like, take a look at how the new flush valve disconnects from its base; You can re-use the old base as long as you don't damage those retaining lugs when you take the old valve out.
With a like-for-like it is quick and easy to replace it.
