my boiler stopped all of a sudden and after trawling this site i realised that the pressure had dropped to 0. I tried to re-pressurise and it went high to over 3 and then shook a bit and ended up at 2.6. now i dont know what to do......please help.

You should regularly check the working pressure of your boiler.
You dont say if the boiler is working now or not?
If its allowed to fall to zero there is a safety switch which turns the boiler off.
When the boiler gets older that switch becomes slow to turn back on when the boiler is repressurised. It can take several hours or even days. Some never reset and have to be changed. We change quite a few for those who will not wait and see and the odd one that has not reset even after three days.
