Hi Chaps,

We're hopefully having a new kitchen fitted soon, and want to increase the limited worktop space by removing the single (large) horizontal radiator. The plan is to fit two vertical rads on adjacent walls - positions somewhat forced by the room layout.

The existing rad is fed via a 'drop' from the ceiling (old house with 'retrofitted' heating and a solid kitchen floor). The vertical rads I have in mind can be 'top fed', which would probably be the best option in this case. The pipework may well look slightly odd, but could be boxed in (??).

However, I'm not sure what to do about fitting TRVs. If these are fitted to the radiator top tappings then will they just sit in a 'pool' of warm air - and start closing down long before the room is up to temperature? I've seen 'remote sensing' valves with a little sensor 'bulb' attached via a capillary tube, but I'm not sure how effective they are. Are there any 'electronic' versions available which could work - although the rest of the CH control is very conventional 'S-Plan' (no Hive/Nest etc.).

Alternatively, would dropping the feeds behind the radiator and connecting to the bottom tappings be a better bet. I haven't checked whether the rad allows this - and I wouldn't be keen on chasing the pipes into the wall!

Hope you can help!

You're right!

Stelrad's site shows exactly that on their CWS vertical range.

TRV with remote sensor might well be the way to go.
