Good morning all,

I am in the process of renovating my old stairs, you kindly helped me with the bottom newel, I would like your assistance again with the top if I may ?

Here are a few pics of the top of my stairs, I want to fit a 91mm square oak newel post.

Please could you advise the best method of fixing ?

The lower is mortice & tenon and may go through into the floor joist area.

They have never had timber newels before as you can see.

Thanks for any help,

Please be assured that carpet is coming out - the lovely old lady that had the house liked it.

my suggestion cut a mortice for the string leaving about 12mm to cover the end of the string [making it a mortice rather than a slot]
you will need to remove a bit off the nose on the top tread to allow it to slide down extend the side or remove some material to allow a tight fit and allow you to secure to planking on the side

Thanks for the reply Big-All,

Please explain this part,

"extend the side or remove some material to allow a tight fit"

Do you mean -- up to the right side joist/plaster board - with extra timber fastened to the new newel

Secondly,

Will normal pva wood glue be ok ?
Or do I need something much stronger ?

Thanks for your help.
