Just moved home and I've got some sort of modern sash window without weights.
When I undo the locks, the top window slides down, which makes it hard to close again as I have to go outside to push the top window back up before locking.

How do I fix this so that the top sash doesn't slide down anymore? It looks like there isn't any mechanism, apart from the felt around the window and frame? Is it as simple as changing the felt?

Pictures to illustrate what I mean:

foxhole: interesting! And I think I know what you mean - there's a plastic tube up the edge, looking like it might hold some sort of sprial mechanism.

I guess something like this, to repair/replace, best to call a professional, or is it easy to buy parts myself with a bit of reading/youtube, figure out how to change? I've never worked with sash windows before. I just don't know if its a 10 minute self job or a 2 hour complex professional job!

Thanks for all the helpful replies! I've found someone locally specialising in sash windows, so will get them to take a look and quote for a repair of the spiral.

Thats best.

As somebody that makes sliding sashes on springs, I can assure you they are tricky, esp yours as the spring is grooved in the jamb.

And you need a special tool to tension and get the clip in place.
