Torbeck valve slow fill

Hi, we are having a problem with a torbeck side entry float valve, but not the same problem as other people. If fills the cistern ridiculously slowly. At first, the water comes out of the correct pipe, but as soon as the float starts to lift, it stops coming in there and just leaks in round the screw ring. Eventually the water does shut off at the correct level, but this can be an hour later. As the water is leaking out rather than coming out the pipe, it slashes out from under the lid of the cistern.

We replaced it with a new one from Homebase, which does exactly the same thing. If it is dismantled and replaced, it fills the cistern quickly and correctly the first time only, the next time you flush it, it goes back to the leaking thing.

The pipe is not obstructed. We have tried it with and without the different reducers. We have tried different water pressure. Have I got the wrong sort of water ? We can't think of anything else

is this tank fed water supply by any chance ?

No, it is off the rising main.

whats the flow/pressure like out of the pipe when not connected to the fill valve ?

sounds like a problem you get on a tank fed supply where the pressure/flow are very low.

Sounds like the feed pipe may have debris in it.
Turn the water off
Take the screw ring off.
Turn water on and check water is clear.

2 things could be wrong with this 1 debris in pipe and inlet valve. 2 pressure reducing piece has been left in the inlet valve when you fitted it try removing this but removing the valve from the toilet and refitting without it in if it had a high pressure one in you may have removed it by mistake as many people also do this

Hi, thanks for all your suggestions.

The pressure, which is from the mains not from a tank, seems OK if you remove the valve and let the water flow directly into the cistern. This would also have cleared any debris in the pipe, there was none.

We have tried it with the high pressure reducing valve, with the low one, and without either. It makes no difference.

Has anyone else experienced this problem ?

Unfortunately we cannot change to another type of valve as no other will fit.

sounds to me like the valve is damaged. a new one might work OK. It might have been fitted together wrong, especially the needle point and its hole.

If you post a pic I think someone may be able to suggest something, even though you know of no other valve that will fit.
