My niece's laptop will not charge from the adaptor & the blue indicator led is not lit when the mains adaptor is connected. It is giving an o/p of the required 19v when disconnected but I am not sure if it is being dragged down when connected. Does anyone know if this model has problems with the jack socket or is it more likely to need a new board, in which case is it worth repairing or is she looking at a new laptop? Many thanks.

Very possibly the socket as it's common on a lot of laptops. They can be replaced, but it a) depends on your diy skills or b) how deep your pocket is.

If you push on the plug while inserted, sometimes you can make a connection, although only while you hold it. This would indicate that the centre pin is almost certainly fractured and/or that one of the solder connections is cracked.

The sockets can range from a few pence to several £, but a commercial replacement might be closer to £200, depending on how long it takes to dismantal. The mainboard would certainly need to be removed.

A service manual is handy too.

Thanks Igorian, there seems to be plenty of info available on the satellite model, but not on the equium.Pushing on the plug, apparently did help at first, but no longer. My first thought was that the socket was faulty, but a simple resistance check says it is ok, no dry joint on the pwb, but I am still unsure if it is the socket or the board. I have downloaded the manual for the satellite but cannot find one for the equium.

Managed to sort the problem, intermitent high resistance between centre pin & wire to the pwb. Blob of solder down the back of the socket cured it.
