transformer for halogen 2 pin bulb light

hi.... i have a 12 bulb 2 pin halogen light and all the bulbs have just blown. would it be the small transformer in the light housing thats faulty ? i don't want to buy 12 bulbs and have them blow again, is there a way to check the transformer and can i fit a new one ?

Yes, but you'll need a multimeter. Do you have one?

Many transformers/light fittings have a fuse on the output side. Look carefully at the fitting and transformer and see if there's a fuse. Test the fuse and replace if its blown.
If it isn't that it could be the transformer.

Fiirst, test that there is 230v on the input to the light.
Then test if there is 12v coming out of the output.


If input, but no output then the transformer may be faulty. There are lots of different types and sizes. Do the above first, then come back with photos of the transformer.

Measuring the output of an electronic transformer is not straightforward. Without the correct load a fault free transformer may shut down or otherwise give a false voltage reading. With the correct load it will give a good reading.

Also some multi-meters will only give correct AC voltage readings at 50 Hz and give false readings on the high frequency AC output from electronic transformers
