Have a tree in the garden which the council will not let me do anything with despite blocking light / Sky signal / overhanging branches etc.

Drastic action needed. What is the best way to "disable" said tree that will not arouse too much suspicion ?

drive into it with a fork lift truck. it will so obvious that it was you but can they prove you did it on purpose, unless that is you dont drive fork trucks for a living

have you had the council out to look at it? They are normally symapthetic and will come up with some solution

Hi

alas councils now take a harder line with this problem. The 'problem' being that someone wants to do something to a tree!

Before you could have expected some understanding but now they use protection orders for alsorts of ends.

I know of someone who had orders placed onto trees to stop previously given planning because someone on the parish council objected and they needed some way of messing the whole thing up!

I would suggest you talk to them and see but have a broad mind on it. Things have now changed and they won't take kindly to you bulldozing the thing any more.

Can you find a valid reason for removal? how near is it to your house and who's land is it on?

I suppose it depends on what you what to do to it

I cant imagine that they would object to reasonable trimming - providing its done by someone who knows what their doing rather than a butcher with a chainsaw

if anything they should be encouragng the proper care of it. that can only be done by proper pruning, not just leaving it alone

I have seen many trees that have done very well by being left alone. So have you.

yes probably didnt quite word that quite right, but they should be promoting the proper care of the tree and should inspect it at the very least. Most trees will benefit from pruning or crowning, to help with light levels, air flow etc.

Many won't! really depends on so many factors that this is a bit of a misleading statement altogether.

Species is only one. Environment is probably even more important given that the council have got involved and probably the biggest influence on this is nothing to do with the tree itself but the people who live near it.

Thanks all for your replies.

It is an Ash as far as I have been told and the Council have already sent someone out to look at it but told me they want me to leave it alone !

Quite rich really as my local council have just given the go-ahead to chop down about 20 trees with TPO's to make way for more houses.

Yes, but it's a waste of time. They do not kill trees, it's another myth ala bumble bees can't fly.

True. It was more of a perpetuation of the old wives tale that I was interested in. Although I have heard that enough copper, perhaps pipe, would do the trick but that it takes ages ;)
