What is the ball park figure one would expect for a crown reduction and thin by a fully qualified tree surgeon? The tree is the just above gutter hight on a typical semi-detached.

I recently got a national tree surgeon firm to come and assess a tree that needs a good prune and they quoted upward of £300 inc vat for the above.

Their staff seem very well qualified but am I paying over the top national firm prices?

I am getting quotes from other tree surgeons. I do want someone well qualified as I need someone who will shape the tree correctly. I assume that the actual cutting will be done by general staff with probably similar qualifications to those a local indepandant tree surgeon may have.

Are there any specific qualifications I should look out for?

Any advice is very much appreciated.

Besides being competent they also need to have the correct insurance incase they accidently damage your or your neighbour's property.

We recently paid a fully qualified tree surgeon with insurance £400 for a days work (Local). Including removal of all of the waste (chipings) but leaving logs cut up as we have an open fire. Him and his mate were there for 8 hours and it was good value for money.

We had various quotes and these were about in the middle but said they could get more done in the time which they did!
