Can someone advise an ignorant new boy. Our 30 year old trianco redfyre oil fired boiler has given wonderful service for years and we are very reluctant to lose it/ upgrade it/junk it. However it is causing trouble - specifically cutting out with red lock out light showing. Pressing restart button on red firing unit works and boiler keeps going for a time: days, maybe only hours. Otherwise all in order and our servicing engineer says boiler is in excellent condition and is regularly serviced. But he seems unable to detect fault. Any ideas where fault may lie?

You really need to be there when the thing gets grumpy.....it's very difficult to pin anything down but just maybe it's the motor capacitor ( doesn't allow the motor to start spinning when called for) or the oil pump solenoid (doesn't allow oil to pass to the nozzle when called for).
Assuming here that the flue ways are completely clear (especially the baffles which are notorious for restricting gas flow) and the system has had oil pressure checks and CO2 likewise.

What burner is fitted? What control box is fitted? It is likely that if still the original burner, it may have the old control equipment, (grey plastic box) and these are obsolete and by now, have very tired solenoids. If the boiler is sound, a new burner may be the most cost effective solution, but on a boiler of this size, the potential savings might surprise you.
More details of the burner may help.

Many thanks for the advice. I've got the servicing engineer coming today and we will get the equipment detail. These i shall post up tomorrow. meanwhile thanks for your help.

Visit of service engineer successful. We tackled the issues as you both suggested and, in addition, changed the house thermostat in the hall . Qe now have the "grumpy" boiler working beautifully. Thank you both very much for taking the trouble to help. Very much appreciated.
