I have a conventional balanced flu boiler (myson economist) it is downstairs. The system is a pumped one with a F&E tank, 3 way valve and hot water tank.

I have 6 rads upstairs and 4 downstairs. I started getting problems with the downstairs ones not warming up. I immediately thought pump and changed it for a new grundfos.

Still no improvement. I drained the system and refilled it adding some sludge remover. I then had problems with the boiler lighting and after 10 secs burn banging and cracking above. I drained again and back filled through the radiator cock downstairs. This eliminated the banging and cracking but the boiler lights for 30 secs then off for 30 and carries on like that.

I have taken the 3 way valve off and that works mechanically and electrically with no issues. I have checked the wheel valve on the bypass and that is fine.

I have worked my way round all the rads to balance. On a couple of occasions suddenly all the downstairs rads have got hot after the system has been running for a couple of hours.

The boiler still shunts on the ignition.

If I turn the heating off even just on HW the boiler does the same.

The obvious thought is a circulation problem or is it a couple of problems.

I thought the heat exchanger may be blocked but not convinced.

All the pipes around the 3 way valve get hot. The upstairs rads are nice and hot. The pump is running and water comes out when I unscrew the front cap.

My assumption is that the boiler is switching off due to water not being moved away from the heat exchanger quickly enough or a burner problem

IVe had a heating guy round who said I had done all the tests and actions he would have done

I've read all I can about it on here but I've got to the point now where I'm seriously considering a new boiler!

The guy you had round was **** , obviously , get another guy in Makesure he's a professional

I suspect your house was a new build with your existing boiler.
I also suspect your pump is noisy!
If I am wrong I am wasting your time.
Could be a build up of magnetite in the pipework.

To answer yes the house was a new build in 1985, yes the pump is a bit noisy at times.
Tell me more

I haven't tried shutting the bypass valve
