Hi

Any ideas if the drain valve (I think its called) under the TRV on the new radiator I have looks ok? Its just that it juts out so I am concerned that it could catch our small children's legs when they are playing in that area and it also looks quite unsightly.

Could the plumber not put this on the other side of the radiator, as they said that's all the could do?

dont know why he didnt use a drain off lockshield and put the TRV on the other end but you only show part of the install so cant fairly comment , I am guessing that end of the rad is nearest to an outside door for draining ?

Not very pretty, is it.....trouble is, that one is soldered in place so even turning it in towards the wall a bit would mean that pipe would need to be emptied of water.
The drain down could happily go elsewhere, but the system would still need to be empty, or perhaps frozen upstream when the work takes place.

Personally I would have put the tee in the other way round and had the drain cock pointing downward, soldered into the bottom of the tee.

Please note, I am not a professional, just an experienced DIY'er.

But from a professional plumbers point of view and in terms of a high quality finish the drain off lockshield should be at the other end of the radiator?

Like I say, I'm no professional, but in terms of kid-friendly houses you just don't want something like a drain cock sticking out into the room? I am not saying my solution would be the best finish, just what I would do practically speaking.

My apologies if I have mis-read your post.

I would have run the end of the pipe straight along the wall, not swept out like that to the valve. With the T on the end then a 45Deg bend in a small connecting piece from the T to the valve. The drain off would then just be sticking slightly out to the right from the T but in against the wall.
The plumber could do a much tidier job IMO, just needs to put his brain into gear!

Looks like another bodge job.... a cheap and nasty valve (Voque?) fitted with a wheelhead cap. Should have a plain cap to stop you adjusting it by mistake

At the end of the day, you're paying for a job that isn't to your satisfaction. You're not complaining about something that is petty either, you want it done correctly on the advice from professionals that it could easily have been done so much better.
The only trouble is they are probably going to be reluctant cause to correct it, it needs to be drained down again but if they are at all professional then they should agree.
Looking from side on, this is how I would have done it, if needed at all

The drain valve is useful but optional and of more benefit to visiting plumbers than directly to you since it seems you won't be draining the system yourself.

You could get them to remove it completely and get them or someone else to put a lockshield with drain on a more appropriate radiator like in a kitchen/hall where there is access to a door.

I wouldn't want a drain valve in my lounge, especially if it looks like that!
