Not argued on here for years - hope everyone's keeping well. :D

I have a query regarding a replacement combi which was fitted to an 84 year old neighbours home yesterday under the Gov's warmfront scheme.

A brief description of the house/system is 2 bed/2 bath (1 is en-suite) kitchen/dining area, lounge and also a walk through utility (leads from kitchen to back door) - the house is a park home.

There are rads or towel rails in every room except the hall and the new boiler is a Worcester Bosch combi.

My queries are,

1. They have not fitted any Trv's at all - I accept they weren't originally any - is it now compulsory or just good practice to fit these along with the new boiler?

2. I find this one a bit odd - there's an existing room stat in the hall - but no radiator. The contractors have said they intend sending a spark in the next few days to replace the room stat - but will only replace the old - not move it.

I told the old guy to phone them about the trv's and they are fobbing him off - in the last phone call they said they can't fit them to plastic pipe!!

Before I phone and have a go - I would like some ammo to fire at them. ;)

I'm pretty sure it's mandatory to fit TRV's to all spaces except that controlled by the room stat to comply with current building regulations, unless the customer consents to them not being installed (i.e cannot afford the extra) however as the installer it would be wise for them to sign something stating their refusal else the installer is contravening the building regs

Thanks for that.

I phoned the installer this afternoon and asked why he left them off and he also told me that you can't fit them to plastic pipe. I said I didn't think there was anything unusal with 10mm Hep2o pipe and that I was awaiting a return call from BCO to confirm what should actually be fitted - the installer put the phone down on me - nice

My neighbour didn't sign to say he didn't want trv's and he doesn't pay anything as its Gov grant funded.

The installers did manage to get the old guy to sign a completion certificate though - even though there are bits missing.

Given that many of the people having this sort of grant aided work done will be the elderly who may take what the the fitters say at face value I can't help but wonder how often this sort of thing happens - very sad.

I've E mailed the main contractor about my concerns.

Trv's should be fitted in line with part l of regs but the installer has made a decision based in his customer that he will get more call backs regarding "cold" radiators, where the trv has been set to low, so has probably decided against it and not fitted them.

Not sure anything will happen really if you report it, worst thing is, he comes back and fits them. I'd not waste my time on being a pedant to be honest, but if you want it to be right for the old folks, then carry on.

I expect that D Hailsham will tell us that its no longer mandatory to fit TRVs.

Very sensible and good practice to do so though.

I doubt that the old guy will be bothered. He has probably never heard of them!

You're quite right about the old guy not knowing what they are

My neighbour has now told me the main contractor (Carrillion) originally sent a surveyor( :D ) to assess the job and, in fairness, this guy did notice there was no rad in the hall (so specified one) and also specified trv's in kitchen/diner and the bedrooms. I assumed this must be the minimum they have to do to comply with any new regs.

The fitters who actually came to do the job (a subby) said there weren't given any extra rad or any trv's so you don't get them

Have a flick through
Link won't work ...
Google part L TRV complient and read the documentation this should give you the current specs
