The National Grid said it would be activating its Demand Flexibility Service (DFS) this evening with 26 major energy suppliers such as British Gas, EDF, Eon and Octopus Energy signed up.

It'll save money overall. Electricity generators are paid based on the moat expensive supplier on the network.

So if you can afford having to bring online the power plant that would bring the prices up from £150/MWh to £350/MWh (numbers made up but plausible) then you save a huge amount of money.

It is progress.

Who saves a 'huge' amount of money? The consumer?

I doubt many people will save a damn thing - the cost of electricity has gone up so much any 'savings' will be swallowed up by inflation.

i would say less than 10% off there figures you may have perhaps 3 items in use none running at full rated power apart from the kettle but thats only about 2 mins everything else will probably be between 25-40% on average over the whole hour

you dont save the money the items use just the few pence in difference in unit cost iff any as you would still use them but at different times so perhaps a few pence a day

Nowt wrong with that, we have had similar for many years in the form of E7 and off-peak tariffs. The essential difference now, is that Smart Meters allow for much better tuning of the whole system, and better rewards. Having the capacity available just to meet the peaks, is very expensive.

Yes, people are making themselves dependant on electricity for transport, heating etc - accepting every scare story and doing as their masters want. We have neither the generating capacity or infrastructure to heat all homes with electricity or power all transport. But the lemmings continue towards the cliff.............
