i have a flat in the roof of old building have a large chimney that has been taken down to roof level and roofed over. i ideally wante to take it down to my floor level but some one said it is probably providing some support to roof, is this likely to be true?? so new plan is to make it into a cupboard as its near front door. how do i go about it?

do you mean turn the chimney itself or the recess created by the chimney breast, into a cupboard?

the chimney itself, ie. put a lintel across, cut out chimney beneath, put in floor and plaster inside of chimney and put osme doors on??

lintelling will have to go wall to wall.

the span will dictate as to wether you use p.c.c., catnic or similar or an r.s.j.

if there are any sooted bricks, then these will have to be removed or a skin built in front to prevent any "bleeding" through the plaster.
s.b.r. solution can be used as an effective barrier.
