Twitter/Facebook icon causing page load lag?

With these new icons, I am getting a page lag when loading on Chrome

The page loads, and then I get the cursor egg-timing until those five icons load

Turn them off in advanced settings.

There does not seem to be any change - there is still about a 2-3 second lag before the icons load. And they don't all load at once, they do so one at a time if that helps

It's better in IE 9 - just over one second to load, and faster still in IE 9 64 bit. So it may be a Chrome issue or setting?

In the meantime I have turned them off and page loads are instant again

There will be a lag while they load, but it should make the page unusable. They don't start to load until the rest of the page is complete, but as they are loading the page should still be usable as if finished. Is that what you experienced or was the page unusable until they were all finished?

The page is unusable -I get the 'busy' cursor until the final icon loads

I recently upgraded to IE 9 and there is a noticable delay now whilst waiting for pages to load. Seems to be exactly as Woody has described.
