Two thirds of a pint of your best ale please landlord.

The government is planning to introduce this measure later this year, I believe it is the equivelent of a schooner. So you will be able to order your usual 1/2 or pint, and also 2/3rds of a pint (for pubs that decide to adopt the measure.

You will also be able to buy smaller measures of wine, to allow 'samples' to be tried.

It wouldn't surprise me if they were considering reducing the volume of a pint.... in the same way that a mars bar or toblerone gets smaller!!!

i was off the oppinion they could choose any measure they like as long as its shown as in 500ml will look like a pint but will be 13.5% short off a pint

its quite common in france to get 250/330/500/660/750/1litres
mind you you also pay different rates depending on where you sit in a lot off pubs/cafes in france

440ml or 500ml has been an option round here for ages...costs 20p extra for the 500ml, but most ends up as foam anyway...pubs need the trade due to the smoking ban, so serve a short measure, that costs less, get more people in pubs.

I was under the impression that pubs could only legally serve draught beer in pints or half pints?

Although they can legally sell 1/3 pint, but that measure seems to have fallen by the wayside.

One of our Wetherspoons pubs here in Derby sell 1/3rd pint measures of the guest ales, so punters can try them before ordering a pint. ;) ;)

1/3rd pint is a legal measure, it tends to be used at beer fairs, also for sampling reasons, plus many strong draught beers are available at these fairs, so if you kept drinking pints you would soon end up r's holed!

Any decent pub will let you sample first so why the need for smaller 1/3 pint glasses? My local will give you a taster in a shot glass when asked.
As to pubs needing the trade after the smoking ban I don't agree with that. The smoking ban has been good for pubs , well most pubs anyway, there are always some that claim the ban caused them to close but in reality it's the prices that have kept customers away. Most pubs have taken advantage of being allowed to put up marquees and smoking shelters at no extra cost thus increasing their pub by another room potentially full of people.
Main reason for the smaller glasses is to attract women to drink beer , many are put off by the image of pints as to masculine or chavvy.

.

I'm not sure about this Ladylola. One of my local hostelries put up a smoking shelter at a cost of several hundred pounds. One even put one up at a cost of over a thousand pounds.
Personally, I do think the smoking ban has had a big effect on pub trade. I certainly didn't see large amounts of non smokers suddenly rushing to the local, now that it's smoke free.
Mind you, there is at least one bar in the country it's quite legal to smoke in. You'll have to wait for an invite off your MP before you can light up in there though. ;) ;)

Sorry , when I said "at no extra cost" I really meant cost s from getting planning permission and extra rateable values.

re: my post further up; I'm not sure of the legality of the pub doing this trade, as the beer is served via cans+a glass, rather than via a pump, lock-ins are regular, as are violent stand-offs between various members of staff, and comittee members, with me, trying to make peace in the middle, depremental to my own personal safety. But to clarify, only been out recently, due to receiving a scratchcard inside a birthday card, and winning £50. That's 3 nights out, over a 3 week period, and 2 takeaways. As a luxury. And being good at pub quiz machines. £2 on 15-1, and Monopoly, yields £40? Can't believe how rubbish people are that go on TV gameshows, that know nothing.

what? 2/3rds of a pint?
NO!
a pint for me and half for the wife...thats how pubs work!!!

Micky, one pub (that used to be one of my favourites) started going downhill when the landlord and landlady called it a day. A succession of tenants then came and went. The last ones to run it as a pub ran it into the ground. We had stopped going there about a year before, but called in occasionally. The landlord didn't care too much about cleaning the pumps and lines out every week, therefore the beer started to be good enough to put on your chips ;) ;) . He barred one lad who, when asked what he wanted said "A pint of your finest vinegar."
Towards the end of their time there, he'd resorted to buying 500ml cans from the local supermarket, then wondered why nobody would pay £1.50 for them. Eventually he settled for people bringing their own cans in and charging 50p for a glass.
Once the pub closed, it never reopened as a pub and is now a shop that sells rock climbing and outdoor gear.
