Hello,

So I've layed the type 1 base for my gravel patio and whacked it down. I've actually got about 1/2 tonne left but I wanted to check for any low of high spots before finishing so I used the whacker plate to get a good idea. I'm a complete novice so I wanted to get it right.

Some parts of the type 1 didn't mix well. I noticed that the big stones went to the bottom of the pile (I got a loose load). What's happened is that there are patches of stones without much fines in them that have been whacked down but are still loose.

Can I just add some fines (or even sharp sand) to these areas of whack it down again?

Adding fines is not an issue. Vibration from whacker plates can cause larger stones to rise to the surface but sprinkling some fines over the area and recompacting will sort it. It is also recommended that you level the stone with a shovel rather than a rake as a rake will separate the larger stones from the fines.

Ahh ok I didn't know that. I've been using a rake and I've noticednth stones have been getting moved from one area to another.
