I am trying to match a new Tyro finish to an old.

This is the old, Circa 1975,

and this is the best I have done so far for the new which is absolutely rock solid on a scratch/finish coat

I have experimented with the different settings on the machine and thicker and thinner mixes but to no avail. I am using standard Cement/Sharp/Glue 1-5-1 mix.

Any tips from you Pro's or should I bite the bullet and do the whole lot afresh. The areas I am doing are an exterior dwarf sunroom wall.

Maybe the original used finer sand? It looks good what you have done so why not do the lot?

You'll never match new tyrolean to the old,, Toptec. The original (circa 1975) looks to me as if it was "Cullamix". It's a product to which you just add water, and it's a much finer cement based mixture. It can be built up to a lot heavier a texture than your pic shows, but it depends on the patience of the person who put it on, and also,,, if it's too watery a mix, it wont build up the same. I think a heavier texture looks more effective than the flat looking texture of the original. I would agree with Joe, and say that what you've done with you're own "recipe" does look good. Go for it. The only thing though when making up you're own mixture, is to keep all ingredients constant. That's the advantage of Cullamix,, you only need to add a measured amount of water,, it will always give you the same colour. I should also point out that i've never made my own from sand and cement, i've always used cullamix.

Thanks Guys. Having read all the advice you have given to previous OP's and the fact that Cullamix is a bvgger to get hold of down this way. (Apparently the local BM's wait until they have a large order before getting it in), I thought I would experiment with a mix suggested to me by an elderly uncle who did this stuff until a few years ago.

I will have to redo the rest using the same mix but one further question........

The old surface was painted with Weathershield a couple of years ago just before we moved in and is in good condition. Will I need to remove this, key it or prepare it in some other way to take a new Tyro covering?

Regards

Bit of a problem with it being painted T/tec. Even though it's a small wall, you can't just tyrolean onto a painted surface, you need suction,, you could try wire brushing it off,,, but it's doubtful. Even if you roughened up the original surface,, it would be too rough to just t/f onto. So apart from roughing up/sbr and re-rendering over the old t/f,,, or removing all,, back to brick, and start again,,,,(drastic measure),,,,, that's about it, unless the other guys can help.
