Brother has bought old probate property that has one of the old UGI gas meters by Hanson company. It is a proper vintage model that is at least 38 years old.

Advised to take photo of meters for accurate billing before work got started, which he did. Couple of weeks in and electricity meter is ticking over, but gas meter digital total has not moved at all. The boiler has been in use as too cold to work in there without heating on.

See pic ref below - the red arrow on the single circular dial to the right is static. Surely this should be moving in line with energy/heating usage.

Has anyone come across this issue? Any way of correcting this? And random Q, what is that yellow bit for??

The yellow bit is a wax seal that you cant tamper with as for the meter not registering I wouldnt be in any rush to tell anyone, but if you are worried contact who you pay the gas bill too and they will get someone out to fit a replacement meter

Thanks Ian. Wasn't sure if maybe we needed to push the yellow to get the thing working or something!!

He is planning on getting a smart meter sorted once fully moved in, so replacement would have naturally happened.

The house is semi detached - is it possible that the gas here was connected to the gas pipework of a neighbour?

I am not a fan personally tbh Dan.

So, does anyone think it likely that the gas could be connected to the pipework of the neighbouring house?

Agreed, count your blessings! If the gas supplier eventually finds out, your bro can always say he didn't know, as he'd never looked at the meter.

Ha, luck does normally favour the supplier!

Would this not have been spotted though when meter readers came round?

Meter readers are exactly that, they record the meter index nothing else they dont know what it was previously, most meters are only read once a year now anyway most readings are submitted online by the consumer

More likely that neighbour will soon ask if he can pipe his property off your brother's meter

While not impossible, it's exceptionally unlikely.
Turn off the valve at the gas meter, and see if the boiler still works.

Meter says 1991.

Thanks for this Flameport - boiler did not work with valve turned off so that rules that niggle out.
