What are the standard sizes of plumbing fitments old and new and what are they intended for? (and why?)

And why is there such a large variation in the "standard" plastic wastepipe sizes of 32mm/40mm?

curious!

Kev,
If you ever put any punctuation in any of your responses, one day I may just understand them.

Took me a while to realise that majority of people on this site are hands on tradesman, as far as spelling, grammar, punctuation go. Does it really matter cos we can all get by, its just nice to know that I might be a better speller than an electrician etc. Just checked this on word cos I know it will come back & hit me (Aye Adam)

don't forget with waste pipe the push-fit won't match the solvent weld because the sizes are different.

Why should being a "hands on tradesman" preclude the use of correct spelling?
