I have a leaking mixer tap which I think I can dismantle once I get the tap tops removed. However, I can't get the tap tops off and need some advice

The mixer tap is probably about 20 years old with a central swivel mixer pipe, with hot tap on the left, cold tap on the right.

Each of the taps has a removable top cover which when removed reveals a single central screw. I can remove the screw from either/both taps, but am then not able to remove the tap cover.

If the tap cover can be removed, then I can get at the tap body, but I am reluctant to apply too much force to the tap cover for fear of causing damage.

Is the tap cover just a push fit onto splines ?
Any suggestions on how to remove much appreciated
Thanks for any help

I carry a small puller specifically for getting tops off taps. SOMe won't shift without it.
If you have to you could split the tap tops and use "tap swaps" whhich replace the gubbins down to the washer and give you a new top. You can get roundish , cross or lever tops, all under £20.

Hi,
If you have the tap off then the next thing is to UNSCREW the collar which will reveal the tap body. ;)

Does the tap cover move up and down in relation to the main body when you open and shut the tap? If so, open it up, insert something (open ended spanner say) into gap created, then close down. The tap cover should be forced off. This is a standard procedure for traditional taps with a shroud over the head gear.

Tried the above link, but it needs your password to access! I think you need to set it up differently - others will know how exactly.

i agrree with the above, i even pointed you in the direction of how to post a picture in your post

Guys

Apologies - looks like I forgot to make the site public
It's public now and you should be able to see the pictures
After making it public, I pasted the link

directly into a browser and got to the images

Prior to that, as you say, it needed a password

Thanks for any advice

STandard taps, advice all holds. You are undoing the screw aren't you!
COuld try pouring boiling water over them - softens the gunk which holds the tops on. As I say I use a puller - you have to effectively do the same. Put a bit of wood or something under a flat bladed tool to use as a lever.

You could also try pulling up with your hand while tapping the loosened screw downwards with a hammer - surprisingly often it works.

Guys,

Thanks for suggestions so far

The taps don't move in relation to the main body, so I think I need to get a tap puller

Is the tap puller you describe a specialist tool ?
If it's easy can you post a picture of the tap puller ?
Where can I get one ?

Any help much appreciated

Thanks
