What about the 11 to 15 year olds? In some parts of the country they are just as big, if not bigger, a problem.

Regarding the big problem of underage drinking, a lot of the problem is not caused by shops selling alcohol to under 18s but by youngsters who are 18 and legally in possession of a Proof of Age card buying cans and alcopops for their underage mates.

If the age restriction for purchasing alcohol for consumption OFF the premises was raised to twenty one it would do away with a lot of the problems. Allowing 18 year olds to drink in pubs and clubs but not buy carry-outs means that they would not be able to buy for their underage pals waiting in a back alley as happens at the moment. By the age of twenty one most youngsters are mature enough not to need the excitement of breaking the law by sneaking a 16 or 17 year old a can of lager. Plus the fact that it is not street cred to be seen mixing with ‘children’ as young as 17.

In the mean time with the police operating a sting why are the guilty few shop keepers not losing their licenses or at least having them suspended for six months during which time a lot of their stock would be past its sell-by date?

you could get drink when i was a kid and that was 40 odd years ago, its been with us for a very lon g time, up it to 21 and they will just move to drugs then what, if 16 year olds were in pubs they wont be getting too pi## as the cost of it will kill then, (drugs or drink wots it to be )
