Hi,

We are about to open our kitchen and dining room out into an open plan kitchen diner but one sticking point is the way the stairs protrude so deeply from the ceiling.

Can anybody give any guidance on what work is likely to be possible to either eliminate the outcrop entirely (ideal) or reduce it's depth.

Thanks

You can only eliminate it or reduce it by changing the stairs. If that is not an option then build a cupboard around it to hide it or have a decent plasterer do a fancy curved job on the bottom.

I agree with FMT.

However, i suspect that some supporting framing/partitioning support has been removed from below the winders in the past. So be cautious when you begin to develope your open plan proposition.

Personally, i find that kind of detail charming.
